Dyson DC39 Animal Canister Vacuum

List Price: Price Not Listed
New From: Check Amazon For Pricing In Stock
Release date April 1, 2012.

We’ve been using the same Dyson Animal upright vacuum for almost 5 years. Couldn’t live without it. The amount of dust and hair it sucks out of the carpet is truly amazing. When we had 3 shedding dogs and a long-haired cat, it saved our sanity. Now we have one shaggy dog with a double coat and our long-haired Maine-Coon/Tabby. Both of them shed like crazy and drag in an amazing assortment of pollen, leaves, small twigs, and dirt.

New From: $21.35 In Stock
Used from: $25.42 In Stock
Release date November 30, 2006.

This pet bed is soft fleece and has a nice bolster around the sides. We use ours in the carpeted back area of our KIA Soul as a comfortable place for Max to ride.

In the house, it’s in a corner, on top of a thick camping mattress for whoever wants to occupy it. For older pets, especially if they joint problems or arthritis, get an orthopedic bed.

Flexi Retractable Lead

Flexi Retractable Lead

List Price: $32.99 USD
New From: $22.86 In Stock
Used from: $18.43 In Stock

With three dogs that I frequently walked together, I never thought I would use or like a retractable lead. I changed my mind. A Flexi lead turned out to be a great way to accommodate one arthritic dog, and later, to let our bigger dog more freedom when walked with our elderly Shih-Tzu. Now, I use a 16-foot Flexi lead all the time with Max, our very energetic terrier mix.

Orthopedic Rate Memory Foam Dog Bed

List Price: $179.99 USD
New From: $82.85 In Stock

An orthopedic dog bed can take the pressure off painful joints if your dog has arthritis. If we didn’t already have a great Comfort-Flow orthopedic pet bed that we purchased from our local vet for Max, our 45-pound terrier mix, I would buy the Orthopedic Rate Memory Foam Dog Bed. or one very similar to it, from Amazon.com.

If you need to order an orthopedic dog bed from Amazon.com, look for genuine memory foam and read the reviews. I can’t see much advantage to having 4-inch thick foam unless you have an very large breed dog. One of the products looks good but is reported to smell horrible.

Welactin Omega-3 Supplement

Welactin Omega-3 Supplement

List Price: $23.95 USD
New From: $23.95 In Stock

We give one teaspoon of Welactin Omega-3 supplement to our dog Cleo every evening with her food. It’s difficult to quantify effectiveness for joint stiffness because she gets a combination of supplements and prescribed pain medications. Her coat definitely feels better.

Cleo is a 16-year-old, medium-sized Shepherd mix with severe arthritis. When she was younger, she weighed about 54 pounds, but age has recently taken its toll on muscle mass as well as her joints. She’s still healthy otherwise, for a dog who’s 95 in human years. She must have a deep gene pool! No serious health problems since 1995, but for the last year, she has suffered with joint stiffness and impaired mobility.

Organix Cheese Flavored Dog Cookies

Organix Cheese Flavored Dog Cookies

List Price: $25.96 USD
New From: $22.68 In Stock

We ordered Organix Cheddar Cheese Flavor Dog Cookies by Castor & Pollux because Chicken Flavor Cookies were not available when we ran out. Lucky accident, that!

Our dogs go just as bonkers over the Cheese Cookies as they do for Chicken. These treats are exactly the right size for Dufus, our most ancient and venerable Shih Tzu, and our bigger dogs love them to bits. Dufus is missing some teeth, but he can easily crunch up these thinner biscuits. Regular dog biscuits are too hard.

FURminator deShedding Tool

List Price: $59.95 USD
New From: $13.17 In Stock
Used from: $9.99 In Stock
Release date May 18, 2006.

The FURminator gently removes loose undercoat hair from dogs and cats before it turns into billowing tumbleweeds and drifts of fur that settle in corners. It doesn’t damage the top coat and reduces shedding from 60% to 90% for over a month.

Cleo, our shepherd/husky (?) mix, has short hair, plus a soft undercoat that molts when the seasons change. The fur sticks out in tufts that fall off everywhere, and she looks like an old buffalo for several weeks. Cleo does not like to be brushed, and will run off at the first opportunity. I put off getting a FURminator because they’re a bit of an investment, and I didn’t want it to end up in the drawer with other brushes. However, after making the plunge and introducing her to it gradually, with treats for rewards, she doesn’t head the other way, and even seems to like being “petted” with the FURminator. Our other dogs like being brushed and are totally blasé about being FURminated.

Blue Buffalo Dry Food for Senior Dogs

Blue Buffalo Dry Food for Senior Dogs

List Price: $47.99 USD
New From: $47.99 In Stock

Our dogs love this food and do very well on it. The ingredients list has a lot to like, for both taste and nutrition, and there have been no bad side effects. They’re healthy, have good energy, and don’t leave the “Life Source Bits” in the bowl. [Added: Some months later, one of our dogs started separating out the life source bits from the rest of the kibble. His technique involved moving a mouthful of kibble to the floor, then picking out only the regular food. Our other dog eats the bits along with the kibble.]

Organix Chicken Flavor Dog Cookies

List Price: $25.96 USD
New From: $20.76 In Stock

I discovered Organix organic dog cookies at PetSmart, on a shelf next to the Blue Buffalo dog food. I was looking for small dog treats that Dufus, our ancient and venerable Shih-Tzu, could eat. Dufus is a small dog with a small mouth, and he came to us missing some teeth. He can’t handle large dog biscuits or small hard dog biscuits.

He loves Organix dog cookies more than any other treat, and they are just his size. He can’t have many treats because he’s on a special “prescription” diet of bland, soft food. He gets one or two of these thin crunchy treats as “dessert” after his scheduled meals to make life worth living and to help keep his remaining teeth cleaner.

Greenies Pill Pockets for Dogs

List Price: $7.99 USD
New From: $3.08 In Stock

Pill Pockets are almost indispensable. You can do without them by rolling pills and capsules in cheese and/or peanut butter, but they save time and are never rejected by our dogs, so we keep using them. Without Pill Pockets, our dogs got very good at leaving the pills on the floor and eating the cheese or other wrapping. They don’t do that with Pill Pockets.

Pill Pockets are available in pill or capsule size and chicken or beef flavor. Capsule-sized Pockets are twice the size of pill-sized Pockets. Cut in half, they still provide plenty of “cover” for pills and even large Azodyl capsules. Dufus, our Shih-Tzu, gets 3 Azodyl capsules a day, plus 2 thyroid tabs. We use 1 1/2 large Pill Pockets for all of this. The .1mg thyroid tabs fit easily in 1/2 Pill Pocket along with the Azodyl.

Nature’s Miracle Stain & Odor Remover

List Price: $35.14 USD
New From: $19.47 In Stock

“Miracle” is a pretty strong word for a cleaning product, but in this case, there’s some truth in it. Nature’s Miracle has removed stains I thought we’d have to live with until we replaced the carpet.

Eventually, all dogs will vomit or have an accident that leaves urine or feces on your floor. If you have male dogs, neutered or not, they may deliberately mark an area when you’re not looking. Our long-haired cats have always unloaded hairballs at least a couple times a year, even with an anti-hairball diet. None of our beloved pets ever seem to pick a hard-surfaced floor that doesn’t stain. It’s always the carpet or a favorite rug. Sometimes, it’s the furniture.

Azodyl

List Price: $44.00 USD
New From: $29.99 In Stock

Azodyl is a probiotic (friendly bacterial) supplement for chronic renal failure (CRF). Our elderly shih-tzu has been taking Azodyl every day for two years. The ingredients are Kibow Biotics®, that is E. thermophilus (KB 19), L. acidophilus (KB 27), B. longum (KB 31), and Psyllium husk.

Along with daily Azodyl, Dufus eats canned Science Diet KD to take some of the strain off his kidneys. The food is bland, but he has learned to look forward to it, and his appetite has improved. Azodyl is for the prevention of azotemia (elevation of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine levels. It does not cure kidney disease, but slows down the buildup of these toxins in the digestive system, and thereby helps prevent further kidney damage.

Dasuquin Joint Supplement for Dogs

Dasuquin Joint Supplement for Dogs

List Price: $62.99 USD
New From: $46.95 In Stock
Used from: $14.97 In Stock

Our 15-year-old shepherd mix, Cleo, has always enjoyed her walks. She had been on a “senior” diet that contained some glucosamine and chondroitin for several years, but it suddenly became obvious that she needed an additional supplement. Our other elderly dog, a Shih-tzu named Dufus also began to slow down. Our vet recommended Dasuquin.

Dasuquin has worked wonders, and both elderly dogs look forward eagerly to their daily walks. Canine joint supplements are expensive, especially if you buy them from your vet. Fortunately, Amazon offers Dasuquin from several pet supply companies, with a savings of about 50%.

Science Diet Simple Essentials Treats: Skin and Coat

New From: $3.99 In Stock

Adult jerky strip treats to promote “a healthy, shiny coat” from Hill’s Science Diet. Our dogs love these treats and will jump for joy when offered. The main ingredients are listed as chicken and vegetables, but they have a strong smell that humans (well, namely me) may find offensive, even repellent.

The treats have a wide strip of chicken and a narrow strip of vegetables. The consistency of the strips is like semi-soft smooth plastic, probably from the essential oils. They are inexpensive and can easily be torn or cut into smaller pieces for little dogs. They will require some chewing, so make sure the piece you give your dog is not the perfect size to be swallowed in one gulp.
