Pill Pockets are almost indispensable. You can do without them by rolling pills and capsules in cheese and/or peanut butter, but they save time and are never rejected by our dogs, so we keep using them. Without Pill Pockets, our dogs got very good at leaving the pills on the floor and eating the cheese or other wrapping. They don’t do that with Pill Pockets.

Pill Pockets are available in pill or capsule size and chicken or beef flavor. Capsule-sized Pockets are twice the size of pill-sized Pockets. Cut in half, they still provide plenty of “cover” for pills and even large Azodyl capsules. Dufus, our Shih-Tzu, gets 3 Azodyl capsules a day, plus 2 thyroid tabs. We use 1 1/2 large Pill Pockets for all of this. The .1mg thyroid tabs fit easily in 1/2 Pill Pocket along with the Azodyl.

So, why would anyone buy pill-sized Pill Pockets? Haven’t figured that one out yet.

It takes one Pill Pocket to cover a whole Dasuquin Joint Supplement for Medium to Small Dogs in tablet form. Half a Pill Pocket is adequate for the small dog maintenance dose, which is half a tablet. However, we switched to Dasuquin Chews, which apparently taste great, and do not require a Pill Pocket.

Except for the ongoing cost, there’s little negative to say about Pill Pockets. The ingredients are simple, without artificial flavors or colors. They do not have a strong or objectionable odor, and are exactly the right consistency for pressing around any pill, tablet, or capsule. Vegetable oil keeps the Pill Pockets moist and malleable, so they have a slightly greasy feel, but you wash your hands after feeding the dog anyway, so meh!

The package probably accounts for a significant percentage of the cost. It’s foil-lined, resealable, and “puffy” with injected air, so the pockets retain their shape on store shelves or in your cupboard, if you’re careful.

Pill Pockets are available at pet supply stores, such as PetCo, PetSmart, and PetLand, and online at Amazon. Prices vary, but are often offered on sale for $1.00 off the list price. Amazon seems to have lower prices than the big box stores, especially if you buy a six-pack. I have to admit that I’ve never bought Pill Pockets online, but after writing this review, I may try it to save money, since I have an Amazon Prime account.
